Flying the flag

Liam Kruger

This image by Lwandile Mattews is a representation of what school should be about: joy, camaraderie, and tradition, concentrated in one badge and one symbol: The Griffin.

Tradition is important for any system to function, as it gives people a sense of belonging. I for one can attest to this. Covid affected my and many other students’ school experience. We largely missed out on Grade 8, a year where tradition is very important. We missed out on so many experiences that every student should be granted.

Because of this, it was only in Grade 9 that I was given a taste of true school spirit.

Tradition is a wonderful thing that will never truly die—any institution should recognize this fact and embrace tradition. It is one of the fundamental building blocks of a great school. And so I end off saying: let tradition fly in the wind like the flag this grade 8 is bearing and Let tradition let it thrive.
