The Journey of Tradition

Preshlin Moodley

Upon entering the gates of Westville for the first time; thoughts about tradition—especially in a high-school—had never really crossed my mind. It was only after a few months that I began to appreciate and understand these unique customs that make Westville… Westville.

The rugby and swimming compulsories were my first taste of school culture. From the war-cries of the spectators to the boys giving it all on the field or in the pool—every exhilarating moment brought me closer to the Badge and its purpose.

From Grade 8 till today, I’ve been growing closer to the school—while also appreciating the growth it has brought within me. It is in large part our culture that builds our character. And it is now up to us to grow this culture and maintain the five pillars of a Griffin: in our actions and within each and every one of us.

The traditions and culture of the school is what links us to our predecessors who came before us, which is why it is up to us to celebrate these traditions and recognize their importance and value to the school. It is our duty and privilege as Westville Boys to pass on these values and actively shape our traditions so that one day we can be proud of the legacy we left for the next generation
